Prepping Business Headshot Photography in NY City

Photojournalist and NYC photographer Teri Bloom took this business portrait for public relations and corporate website.

A few days before the photo shoot, prepare a punch list with all details, and visualize what the camera will see.

This may be a given, but jotting down some prep notes a few days before the photo session can be a big help. Ask staff to organize their work space and clean up clutter. Remind everyone that there will be a professional photographer on-site and to dress professionally. Men can be reminded to have a tie and jacket on hand, and women might want to have their hair and make-up done. And finally, have a list of required photos so that the photographer gets all the shots for you!

A few thoughts on how to get more pleasing corporate portraits, its the little things that matter!

Its the little things that often have the biggest impact, and with corporate headshot photography, attention to small details is important. Almost always, the camera should be higher than the person as this will slim down everyone's face and minimize chin issues. Everyone is advised to avoid wearing white or light pastel clothing, unless its underneath a darker jacket -- because these light colors tend to wash-out skin tones. Women should wear very simple and minimal jewelry as we want the attention focused on the person and not the accessories. Similarly, simple clothing is preferred to busy patterns that can go in and out of fashion. And finally, proper lighting and placement of reflectors are more flattering for everyone than using a flash or available light, so if possible, have your photographer use professional umbrella or light-box lighting!
